Living in India presents unique health and wellness considerations. Below is some information on several health topics you may want to be informed of prior to your arrival in India.

Dengue Fever

Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral illness which occurs primarily during the rainy (monsoon) months from August to October.

It is important to prevent mosquito bites by using repellant throughout the day. The prevention of dengue fever requires control or eradication of the mosquitoes carrying the virus that causes dengue. This means limiting standing water where they breed. AES regularly treats the campus during high dengue season.

Symptoms include severe joint and muscle pain, swollen lymph nodes, headache, fever, exhaustion, and rash. A more severe form can lead to shock and possible death.

There is currently no vaccine to prevent dengue fever.

Digestive Issues (AKA Delhi Belly)

Digestive complaints, such as nausea, gas, bloating, cramps, vomiting, and diarrhea are not uncommon, particularly amongst new arrivals. Typically this is from contaminated food or water. Many of these symptoms can be avoided by doing the following:

Wash your hands before eating or preparing food. Make sure you wash after sneezing or coughing into your hands and after using the toilet (or at other times when the hands may have become soiled).
Do not eat from any street vendor or place where you do not feel confident that the food has been properly cleaned and prepared.
Use a fruit and vegetable wash at home before preparing food or eating fresh vegetables.
Cook food properly and thoroughly.
Only drink water that has been purified properly or bottled water in which the caps are properly sealed. Potable drinking water is available throughout campus for students to fill water bottles. All tap water on campus has been purified.

If you experience fever, persistent vomiting, and/or diarrhea that lasts over 24 hours, see blood in your vomit or stool, or feel weak and dizzy, you may need to go to an Emergency Room or see a physician.

Heat Related Illnesses

India is a country of extreme heat, sun, and humidity. Dehydration occurs when the body does not get enough water OR there is excessive loss of water due to sweating, vomiting, or diarrhea. The initial response to dehydration is thirst and concentrated (dark-colored) urine, followed by abdominal or muscle cramps, heart palpitations, weakness, and dizziness. With severe dehydration, there is confusion and weakness, followed by coma (which may lead to death).

The best way to prevent dehydration and heat-related problems (such as heat exhaustion or heat stroke) is to drink enough water. Children may need up to one liter a day. Adults will require a minimum of two liters a day, with an additional liter for those who are having increased sweating or loss of fluids.

If excessive water loss is occurring, it is best to replace both water AND electrolytes with Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS), Pedialyte, Gatorade, Powerade, or another similar product.
