Adult Education
The American Embassy School of New Delhi is pleased to announce its fall session of academic and recreational classes for adults. A variety of courses are offered, all designed to help make the most of your stay in India.
These classes are open to AES, British School, French School & German School Parents, Staff and members of the Diplomatic Missions and the International Government Organizations. In order to participate in the AES Adult Education courses, you will have to sign-up online (*see the registration page for more information). We will have a hybrid module this semester, wherein some courses will be online and some on-campus. These courses are expected to follow our campus COVID rules and guidelines.

EXPLORING THE ART AND CRAFT OF POTTERY
They say to create is to come a step closer to the divine. When you hold a piece of clay, the world of possibilities is open to you. Pottery is not just an art, it is meditation. As a practitioner one can lose oneself for hours- shaping, re-shaping, moulding.
There has never been a better time to immerse oneself in the soothing and calming aura of clay.
Join us for pottery classes, and experience the stimulating and satisfying effects for yourself. We guarantee unadulterated relaxation.
If you are a beginner in pottery and are looking forward to taking it up as a hobby or turning it into a profession, then this course is meant for you. This is a three-month program, classes held once a week, launched with a mission and passion to impart a strong foundation in hand-building pottery skills.
You will be given a studio tour where you can experience the nuances of pottery making on potters wheel. You will be helped to make a variety of art work like platters, bowls, bells, animals, photograph holder .

In this course you will get an introduction to this medium of art - color mixing in oils and easy step-by-step method to start your own canvas painting. This course is especially designed for those art lovers who have never dared to paint or any newcomers with lots of enthusiasm to learn to paint. It’s a wonderful opportunity to explore and create and by the end of the course get to complete two canvas painting on the subject of your choice. The above course fee includes the material cost.
The instructor has a degree in commercial art and has experience teaching children and adults for many years in the field of art. She is taking classes at AES and conducted workshops at the British Council Library.

If you already know some Hindi and wish to try to retain and practice what is already learnt, this is the perfect class for you. Hindi grammar requires practice and repetition to memorize, hence in addition to doing multiple hands-on exercises to cement what you already know, eventually the class takes baby steps to introduce some other intermediate topics. Beginner’s Course Level-1 consists of 24 lessons in a semester. This course introduces basic Hindi Vocabulary while imparting an extensive introduction to multiple aspects of Indian socio-cultural life through audio- visual shows. Each lesson is designed to give an enriching experience of watching video clips from a range of Bollywood films, documentary films, a wide range audio visual shows about forms of Indian dances and musical trends (classical/Folk ), food, forms of modern and traditional theatre belonging to specific regions and much more. Each session has a set of vocabulary associated with show of the day.
About the Instructor:
Poonam Arora brings years of experience and a zest for teaching conversational Hindi across levels, for non-Hindi speaking persons – from overseas and India. She weaves in her deep cultural and linguistic knowledge of Hindi, with her teaching experience, theatre, writing, storytelling, and Zen tangle sketches, to develop an innovative pedagogy which is simple and effective. Her ‘easy to absorb’ lessons and ability to customize her lessons to an individual’s needs, even in group classes is evident in her classroom interactions. Poonam also has experience in conducting online conversational Hindi classes for diplomats and other foreign residents, as well as some non-Hindi speaking Indians, adapting her creative methods to make the online learning experience effective and engaging.
With a master’s degree in Hindi, Poonam has worked for NGOs in Hindi speaking areas and in mainstream schools where she contributed to writing in Hindi, telling stories, setting up libraries, developing film scripts for NGOs, translations from English to Hindi, and conducted workshops with trainee teachers and students.

Calligraphy is an art of beautiful writing or lettering which got lost over the last few years with the advancement of computer age. Now its getting revived and people are getting to know the joy of writing personal notes and letters again.. Anyone with an interest for writing can join the class, no prior knowledge required, only love for art and desire to learn to write beautifully. Participants get to learn different fonts and to use pencil, pen and brush techniques on paper. They further get to do some projects like making invites, labels, framed names, monograms, poetry, wall hangings and quotes of their choice. By the end of the course the participants fall in love with their own handwriting, that’s for sure.
The instructor has a degree in commercial art and has been calligraphy professionally & Commissioned projects for the last 20 years, including workshops at various venues like British Council Library.

This course is planned to bring in all the segments of Indian History, beginning with the background of ancient India to the influx of Islam and the pattern of change in Medieval India, ‘The Delhi Sultanate ‘Mughal India ‘ and then British India. The course will extend all the way through the period of Modern India with emphasis on the development of nationalism, the 1857 revolt, the growth of congress and also updating the contributions of the freedom fighters. It will cover Mahatma Gandhi and his role in giving Independence to India . It would also cover the reasons of the ‘Partition of India ‘ and its impact which we are facing till today. The course would even be balanced with cultural background and reference to the ‘Seven Cities of Delhi’ with field trips to some of the popular monuments in Delhi if required .
Kiran Puri is an expert in History and has been teaching the course ‘Indian History and its Culture with emphasis on the ‘Seven Cities of Delhi’ for the last 25 years . She holds two degrees of post graduation, one in ‘History’ and the other in ‘Education’. Has been a full time employee at the ‘American Embassy School’ for more than 27 years .

Otherwise, a keen pair of eyes and a notebook will suffice. This course is not restricted to the AES community.

Sleight of Hand: India’s Handcrafted Textiles and Her Artisans
Sunaina SUNEJA graduated from AES in 1975 and has been working with India’s handcrafted textiles for over 30 years.
In a 4-part series and two guided visits, Sunaina narrates the background and history of some of India’s textiles along with her personal stories, combining tradition with contemporary design.
- An introduction to Indian Textiles.
- KHADI, the handspun handwoven fabric of peace, was advocated by Mahatma Gandhi, during India’s freedom struggle.
- INDIGO, its inherent magic and romance, captured through photographs and samples of different techniques of indigo dyeing and printing will also be displayed.
- PHULKARi, the vibrant embroidery of Punjab and the exclusive story of the revival of its traditional technique
- VISITS :
1GANDHI SMRITI is the Memorial-Museum dedicated to the Life and message of Mahatma Gandhi , through photographs, newspaper articles of his time, dioramas as well as the Eternal Gandhi Multimedia Museum.
It is here that he spent the last 144 days of his life and was assassinated on January 30, 1948.
Sunaina has dedicated over three decades working with KHADI, the homespun cloth Mahatma Gandhi advocated during India’s freedom struggle and it is with that lens that she will walk participants of this guided visit through the Museum.

TEXTILE GALLERY at the National Crafts Museum, Bhairon Marg, New Delhi (2 hours)
Exquisite vintage textiles from different regions bring to the forefront the renowned expertise and skill of india’s craftspeople.
The Charkha Museum opened in 2017 in the heart of Delhi, Connaught Place. An appeal was published in newspapers requesting individuals to contribute any Charkha (Spinning Wheel) they possessed and that's how this collection came to be.The museum has a small but interesting number of Charkhas, simple to embellished ones and also includes the New Model Charkha which is most commonly used today

The caste system is arguably the world’s oldest continuous cultural form of social stratification, with rules originating in the second to third century BCE. This course seeks to analyse the different perspectives on caste, modernity and gender, the manner in which various social categories in India appropriated modernity and strove to (mostly) unsuccessfully benefit from it.

Relief is a kind of sculptural technique where you will be using the medium and give a 3D look(to raise) to your piece of work. You will be using wood base. You can make mirror frame out of it or relief painting as such on the wood base.

In this activity the learner will choose the design and make a screen out of it. This screen you will use to print on a piece of cloth by using pigment colours. You can print T-shirts, Bed covers , home linen or anything of your choice you want to print.

Payment Information
School Entry Procedures
* Note- We are currently reviewing our school's covid guidelines for SY22-23.
All adults coming on the AES campus must show proof of full vaccination for COVID-19. Full vaccination must be from World Health Organization (WHO) or Indian Government approved vaccines.
You are considered up to date with your COVID-19 vaccinations if:
- You have completed your primary series but are not yet eligible for a booster
- You have received 1 booster but are not recommended /eligible for a 2nd booster
Testing:
All participants must test themselves for Covid 19 and bring the negative Covid 19 test/ report while coming to the AES Campus every week till further notice. The Covid test kits can be purchased from amazon. Once you show the negative report at the gate you will be issued a Covid-19 test completed card which will be valid for a week. Please carry this card along with your ID card for the entire week whenever you are coming to attend a class. (Covid test should not be taken any more than 2 hours prior to your entry in the campus.). You will not be allowed to enter the campus if you do not have the negative test report kit or test completed card issued by AES.
Face Masks:
·All members of the AES community must wear a valveless face mask (or mask with a covered valve) whilst inside any school buildings, until further notice. Carrying extras are recommended. Face masks are also recommended for all outside spaces.
Notification of Positive Test for COVID-19 Policy:
In the event of a instructor/ participant receiving a positive test result, please notify me as soon as possible (contact details above), so that I can inform the Health Office.
You will need to isolate yourself for 7 days from the day you tested positive.
Health Office staff will conduct contact tracing to determine if there was exposure to other community members so that they can take appropriate next steps to mitigate further spread.
Campus Guidelines:
Instructors and Participants are not allowed onto campus (outside or inside) unless they are up to date with their COVID vaccines (see top of page). All adults must show their vaccine sticker to the security team upon entry. You have until the end of August to retrieve your vaccination sticker from AES and in the meantime, you will be allowed on campus. (AES will issue stickers to the participants who are fully vaccinated)
All visitors will go through designated entry gates to check their temperature before entering campus. Anyone with a temperature of 100°F/37.8°C or higher will not be allowed inside the campus.
Entry to the campus will be allowed only 10 minutes prior to your class. You are requested to head to your designated classroom directly.
PLEASE DO NOT REGISTER FOR THE ADULT EDUCATION PROGRAM IF YOU ARE NOT FULLY VACCINATED FOR COVID 19.

Registration Procedures
- Adult Education classes will be open to AES, British School, French School & German School Parents and Staff. Members of the Diplomatic Missions and the International Government Organizations will also be able to sign-up and participate in the AES Adult courses.
- Members of the Diplomatic Missions and International Government Organizations will have to give copy of their office ID or a letter from their office administration verifying they are a member of the staff and are interested to take the adult education course.
- Online registration to courses (https://vp.aes.ac.in/adultedu/) will be open from August 12 to 26, 2022.
- You may sign up for more than one course
- Each course has a maximum class size. The system will prompt in the case you are on the waitlist.
- Should a place become available, waitlisted participants will be notified to make the course fee payment and join the course.
- A minimum of 6 people need to sign-up for a course for it to be offered.
- You have to upload your vaccination certificate/ card at the time of registration
Payment Procedures
There are two options for making the course fee payment:
Online Payment:
- Online payment can be made only in US dollars using a credit card.
- Payment is made at the time of registration.
- In case the payment failed in the first attempt you can click the payment link received in the confirmation email to make the payment again.
- Once the waitlisted participant is confirmed to join the course he/she will receive a confirmation email with a link to make the online payment.
Offline Payment:
- Use the reference number provided to you at the time of online registration and make the payment at AES.
- Payments shall be made in check favoring the AMERICAN EMBASSY SCHOOL and leave it in an envelope at the AES gate no. 2. Please mention your name and the details of course, for which you are making the payment
- Payment of the course fee has to be made at the AES within 2 school days of registering for the course. Your registration will be cancelled if the payment is not made within this specific time.
Refund Policy
- Withdrawal from course before attending the 1st class – an administrative fee of Rs. 500/- will be charged and the balance will be refunded.
- Withdrawal from course after attending the 1st class – 90% of the course fee will be refunded.
- Withdrawal from course after attending two or more classes – No refund.
- Full course fee will be refunded only in the case of course cancellation due to insufficient registration.
- You will be notified regarding your course fee refund, and when to collect the same from the school cash office.
